An opportunity not to forget our past.
The Museum of Milk was created in the "Latteria Turnaria di Cerano", founded in the 1896, for exhibition and educational purposes, to enhance the agricultural resources and local heritage: typical products, but also tradition and local culture.
The Museum is the place where technological and ethnographic traditions of milk processing in Valle d’Intelvi are collected and preserved.
On the third floor there is an open space where you can admire churns, congas, cheese moulds, brentel, a beautiful caldera (zangole, conghe, culdere, fascere....) ancient objects used till the second part of the last century to trasform milk into cheese. Most of the tools has been inherited by the old diaries of Cerano and Veglio, but also donated by local people. Dive into the past looking at work tools, old objects that were part of everyday life.
THE HISTORY OF THE DAIRY
At the end of the 19th century, the small milk producers of the Municipality of Cerano d'Intelvi gave rise to a communal dairy to be able to place the small quantities of milk produced in excess of those destined for self-consumption and calf rearing. It was a LatteriaTurnaria in which the various members carried out the milk processing of all the contributors according to pre-established shifts. The socio-cheese maker could keep all the product obtained, providing to sell it and pledging to cede his milk to the other partners in the future until he had returned the whole quantity of milk lent.
In other cases, the partners were worried
In the dairy, you can visit:
- Milking stations
- Processing areas
- Maturing cellars
The museum is a perfect opportunity to get to know the past, not only through working tools, but also through everyday objects. A life very different from ours - harder and full of sacrifices - but certainly true and in close contact with nature.
Cheese production
On the ground floor a new dairy has been opened managed by "Azienda Agricola Sgheiz Lorena", so new cheese production takes life. They trasform the milk of their cows into genuine products.. There is also a little shop where typical products are sold: ZINCARLIN, RICOTTA, BUTTER, FURMAGIT..
